AKSMOPP: The Journey So Far
August 1, 2025
The Akwa Ibom State Medical Oxygen Production Plant (AKSMOPP) was officially commissioned on March 1, 2025, by the Honourable Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate. In keeping with Governor Umo Eno’s visionary ARISE Agenda, AKSMOPP was established to revolutionize the delivery of medical oxygen across Akwa Ibom State and neighboring states. This was cordinated by the Hon. Commisioner for health, Dr. Ekem Emmanuel John.
Since commencing operations, the plant has produced over 18,142 cubic litres of high-grade medical oxygen and filled 2,601 cylinders. Among these are 2,299 jumbo cylinders (6.2–7.5m³) and 302 small cylinders (2.0–3.0m³).
Through its distribution network, AKSMOPP ensures uninterrupted oxygen supply to public and private hospitals, as well as emergency services in the state. Its operations have reduced dependence on out-of-state oxygen procurement by an impressive 95%, and improved oxygen availability by nearly 80%—a major leap in the state’s pandemic preparedness and overall healthcare resilience.
Beyond supply, the agency provides technical support to facilities and ensures safety compliance across board. This holistic approach not only fortifies the state’s healthcare infrastructure but also empowers local health workers through reliable access to life-saving medical oxygen.
